Latin expressions explained (30): Lapsus.
This Latin term was previously indicated by the phrases « lapsus calami » or « lapsus linguae », which meant « mistake, slip of the pen » and « mistake, slip of the tongue », respectively.
Today, the word lapsus is used alone and refers to an unintentional error consisting of using one word instead of another. It is a confusion or inversion of words. Psychologists sometimes see it as an effect of the unconscious. The lapsus can be insignificant, funny or embarrassing…
Example: I have a date with my phone instead of I have a date with my friend.
