Latin expressions explained (17): urbi et orbi.
This phrase is used by the Pope for Easter or Christmas, when he delivers his address to Catholics from the balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He speaks for « the city » (Urbi) and for « the world » (Orbi), for Rome and for the universe.
Urbi et Orbi means for the city, a given territory, and much further, the whole world. That is to say, for the eternal city, for the capital of the empire, and therefore for the entire empire and all its territories. Speaking urbi et orbi means conveying a message that is both close and distant.
