Latin expressions explained (16): Ad astra.

This Latin phrase means « to the heavens, to the stars. » It appears to come from a verse in The Aeneid (-29,-19), by Virgil the great Latin poet. Metaphorically, the expression means reaching the heights, going higher.

Used in conjunction with other phrases such as « per ardua » or « per aspera, » it serves as mottos for countries, military units, and universities: per aspera ad astra (through hardships to the stars) for NASA, the German Empire (1871-1918), per ardua ad astra (through adversity to the stars) for the Royal Air Force (RAF)…

I will strive for power until the end, ad astra. (to the heights of power…)
