Latin expressions explained (28): Cogito ergo sum.
The famous quote from philosopher Descartes (1596-1650) used in French in Discourse on the Method (1637), and in Latin in Meditations on First Philosophy (1641), or Principles of Philosophy (1644). Cogito, ergo sum translates to « I think, therefore I am », or « I think, therefore I exist. »
The Cogito establishes a foundation for human existence. Because we think, we know that we exist. Often, cogito ergo sum can be translated as « I doubt, therefore I am « , because the central, essential concept of Cartesian philosophy is that of doubt. This translation is closer to Descartes’ thought.
