Latin expressions explained (21): INRI.

INRI is an acronym, an abbreviation referring to Jesus: Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews. This inscription is often found on crucifixes in churches.

Indeed, according to the Gospel of Saint John, Pontius Pilate (the Roman governor) had these words marked on the Cross during the crucifixion of Jesus. The small wooden sign fixed to the Cross is said to have been found in the 4th century and is now preserved in the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem in Rome. This relic, which testifies to this appellation given to Jesus (which he always refused), is called « the Titulus Crucis. » (There is no scientific consensus on the dating).

INRI means Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
