Latin expressions explained (15): Fiat Lux.

Latin expressions explained (15): Fiat Lux.

This Latin phrase is found at the very beginning of Genesis, the first book of the Bible’s Old Testament. The book describes the creation of the world, man, as well as the history of the first humans and the descendants of Abraham.

Fiat lux are the first words spoken by God in the Bible in Latin (Genesis, Chapter 1, Verse 3). They mean, « Let there be light, or let the light appear ». And by the Word, He created light. Beyond the religious reference, the expression can be used to present an invention, or to conclude a reasoning that reveals something interesting, or to signify that one has understood something.

After listening to his speech for an hour, I finally understood, fiat lux!
