Latin expressions explained (27): honoris causa.

This Latin expression seems to date back to the late 19th century. It means « for the sake of honor » or « with the intention of honoring ». The expression relates to a distinction awarded to a personality who has accomplished significant things in their field.

Often, and almost exclusively, this expression is found in the formula « Doctor, or Doctorate, Honoris Causa ». A university may decide to confer a title, a doctoral degree, upon a personality to honor them and for prestige. Obtaining the title, therefore, bypasses the studies and path required to earn it.

This writer was awarded Honoris causa in letters by the University of Paris. (He was granted the title of Doctor of Letters…)
