Contemporary Poetry: How Many Deaths?

How many deaths, how many centuries
Before this conflict will cease?
How much suffering, how many tears
To one day silence the weapons?
How many children killed
To truly negotiate?
How many countries affected
To compel the belligerents?
To what level of terror
To what level of fear
Must we reach
For an independent Palestine to emerge?
For Israel to live in peace?

How many sons will have to bury their fathers
For families to laugh on both sides of the border?
Apparently, not enough yet, apparently the cup is not full
For reason to replace hatred.
